Kent State Cross Country Teams Gear Up For Spartan Invitational

Action gets underway from Michigan State's Forest Akers Golf Course Friday (Sept. 16) at 1 p.m.
The Kent State men's and women's cross country teams travel north to East Lansing, Mich., to run in Michigan State's Spartan Invitational Friday (Sept. 16) at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
The men's 8k is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. with the women's 6k to follow immediately after. The race will feature 24 collegiate teams on both the men's and women's side, with Mid-American Conference foes Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Toledo and Western Michigan taking part alongside the Golden Flashes.
The Kent State men's cross country team opened the 2011 season in dominating fashion at the Tommy Evans Invitational last Thursday (Sept. 8) at Firestone Metro Park. The squad squad defeated host Akron (25-30), Buffalo (24-35), Malone (22-33) and Youngstown State (16-47) in dual scoring action. The women's team bested Youngstown State (24-31) but fell to Akron (20-35), Buffalo (27-28) and Malone (20-41).
Redshirt sophomore Steve Fischer (Hudson, Ohio) led the way for the Golden Flashes on the men's side, taking third in 20:26. Kent State was led on the women's side by a fourth-place finish by redshirt freshman Paige Foster (Prior Lake, Minn.) thanks to a time of 19:23 in her collegiate cross country debut.
Kent State closes out the September portion of its 2011 schedule in two weeks, journeying to Cedarville, Ohio, to participate in the All-Ohio Championships.
